Boldly going where I had never gone before, I organized a field trip for my 7th and 8th graders. On Nov.
29, 2004, we went to the S. Dillon Ripley Center, which is a small Smithsonian museum.
The exhibit, entitled Driving Force, displayed the work
of 15 young artists with disabilities. My 7th graders went to see how the artists have answered for themselves "What
is my place in this world?", which is one of the Essential Questions for their current unit. My 8th graders went to
learn how the artists answer one of the Essential Questions from their unit: "How can an individual's beliefs and actions
impact a community?"

In the week leading up to the field trip, each student had to familiarize himself with one of the pictures (I provided
the students with information about the artists and copies of their work) to present to the rest of the group when we arrived
at the museum.

By clicking on the link below, you can see video footage of one student's presentation. Matilda did
a great job of teaching her classmates and teachers about the painting. She provided her audience
with background information about the artist and pointed out the parts of the painting of which she thought they should take
special notice.
